In January 2007 GTS Novera (as of 1st. October 2010 GTS Czech) launched the metropolitan data network in Vsetín. The company built the network in 2006 after winning the tender put out by the Municipal Council.

The metropolitan network now interconnects offices, organisations and schools in town and the population of Vsetín also has an opportunity to get high speed, wireless connection to the Internet. The network actually offers the use of 11 Internet information kiosks situated in public buildings and schools.

Metropolitan network brought benefits

„Vsetín now has a modern wireless metropolitan network interconnecting municipal administration buildings, institutions and schools. Thanks to this solution the town was able to cut its telecommunication costs,” explained JUDr. Lubomír Gajdůšek, Deputy Mayor of the town of Vsetín. “The Internet information kiosks allow the population and visitors in town to search for the cultural, sport or tourist information,” he added.

“Apart from interconnecting the municipal agencies, the metropolitan network in Vsetín also provides high speed Internet access to the people of the town,” added Tomáš Budník, Technical Division Manager for GTS Novera. “As the operator of this metropolitan network we provide a range of telecommunication services to the municipal institutions as well as the public. I believe that the network will make a significant contribution to a wider use of high speed Internet connection by Vsetín people.”

Assistance from the EU and the state

The cost of building the network was CZK 7.4 million, with 75 % of the costs covered by grants from the EU and 10 % covered by the grant from the Czech Republic State Budget.

Technical solution

The metropolitan network in Vsetín is a wireless network. It covers the whole municipal area and the suburban areas of Sychrov, Trávníky, Ohrada, Rybníky, Luh, Rokytnice and Jasenka. To connect the municipal administration buildings, institutions and schools the network operates in the 10.5 GHz band, which allows high data transfer speeds and safe connection, and in the 3.5 GHz licensed band using WiMax technology. Mainly to facilitate access and reduce costs, for connecting end users the network uses unlicensed 2.4 GHz band (known as ‘WiFi’).
